Reasons Why Candidates Delay Joining

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

As an employer, it can be extremely frustrating when a candidate who has accepted a job offer
delays joining. Despite being given a start date, they may provide reasons such as

  1. Death in the family
  2. Hospitalisation of a family member
  3. Recently met with an accident
  4. Current employer not relieving them.
While these reasons may be genuine, there are other true reasons behind candidate’s delayed
    joining. Some of the common truths behind the above reasons are;

a. Current Employer Delays Relieving:

One of the primary reasons why candidates may delay joining a new organization is due to a delay in
the relieving process from their current employer. This situation typically arises when the candidate
has to serve a notice period as per the terms of their employment contract. Sometimes, unforeseen
circumstances or operational constraints on the part of the current employer can extend the notice
period, causing a delay in the candidate’s transition to a new role.

b. Candidate Negotiating Better Offer Elsewhere:

In a competitive job market, candidates often receive multiple offers, giving them the opportunity to
negotiate better compensation or benefits. When a candidate finds themselves in such a position,
they may choose to delay joining their new employer in order to engage in negotiations and secure a
more favourable offer. This delay can be seen as a strategic move to maximize their professional
growth and financial well-being.

c. Current employer offering a raise:

A significant factor that can lead to candidates postponing their start dates is when their current
employer offers them a raise or a promotion. This unexpected development can create a dilemma
for the candidate, forcing them to reconsider their decision to switch organisations. The temptations
of improved benefits, career growth, and the comfort of familiarity may persuade candidates to
delay their transition, as they weigh the pros and cons of accepting the counteroffer.

d. Domestic Exigencies Delaying Joining:

Life outside of work can sometimes present unexpected challenges that demand immediate
attention. Candidates may face personal or domestic exigencies such as family emergencies, health
issues, or relocation needs, which can hinder their ability to join a new organization on the originally
agreed-upon date. In such cases, candidates may need additional time to address these
circumstances before committing to their new role.

Conclusions: –

While employers may feel frustrated by these delays, it is important to remember
that candidates are entitled to make informed decisions about their career. However, if the delay is
causing problems for the employer, it may be worth communicating with the candidate to
understand their position and whether they still intend to join the company. In some cases, the
delay may be a sign that the candidate is not fully committed to the new role, and it may be better

to consider other candidates. Ultimately, employers need to be patient and understanding while also
being proactive in managing their hiring process.
